From the North Island, you leave the relative calm of Wellington Harbour and head into the open ocean that runs between the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day, as you pass Baring Head Lighthouse and head into Cook Strait you can see the southern-most point of the North Island at Cape Palliser to the east and the Kaikoura Mountain Range to the south. Entering the South Island you pass by Arapawa Island and enter the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound. This 64km sailing is one of the best ways to see New Zealand.
