The development of themed holidays is vital to the survival of the New Zealand tourism industry, says a key industry player.
Apex Car Rentals, New Zealand’s largest independent car rental company, is pushing the concept of themed holidays as a way to entice invaluable short haul visitors back to New Zealand time and again.
Apex Rentals Marketing Director Ricki Shaw says that holidays focussed around a theme - such as Maori culture, New Zealand wine, golf, music and film - provide visitors with a "completely personalised holiday experience".
"Over the next few years whilst the world is still pulling itself out of global recession, New Zealand tourism will become increasing reliant on visitors from short-haul destinations, in particular Australia."
"To continue to successfully attract Australian’s back to New Zealand for a second, third and fourth time, we need to be able to offer them something much more than just a generic holiday experience."
"Themed holidays address this need by creating a reason to come back and have a completely different holiday experience with us."
Mr Shaw adds that themed holidays create an opportunity for the tourism industry to generate revenue during low and shoulder seasons, as many themes aren’t tied to traditional seasonal patterns.
Apex Rentals is backing the concept with its sponsorship of this year’s International Best of Wine Tourism Awards, to be held in Christchurch on November 4.
The awards will recognise excellence in wine tourism with categories in winery accommodation, innovative wine tourism experiences, sustainable wine tourism practices and wine tourism restaurants.
Mr Shaw sees wine tourism as one of the key holiday themes available to the New Zealand tourism industry.
"Our landscape will always be a very strong part of our country's ‘brand’, but themed tourism allows us to personalise that brand, and present it in a way that links visitors with New Zealanders in a far more intimate manner."
