Apex Car Rentals staff are experiencing a groundswell of public interest in the soundtrack to the new Apex Reconnections TV commercial, currently screening on New Zealand televisions.
The hauntingly beautiful rendition of the Breaks Co-op song The Otherside was recorded specifically for the advertisement and performed by New Zealand singer Taisha.
Apex Car Rentals Marketing Director Ricki Shaw said that since the commercial’s release on October 4 the company has received multiple enquiries from the public every day, asking specifically about the song.
"We are typically getting about 3-4 enquiries a day about the song itself, either through our central reservations centre or our website," said Mr Shaw.
"Most people want to know who the singer is or where they can buy the song."
The same questions have been asked numerous times on YouTube, where the advert has been viewed over 1,500 times to date.
Singer Taisha has her own success gauge for the ad: "I’ve been singing on jingles for 18 years. I know it’s a good one when my phone rings off the hook with people saying ‘is that you on that new ad?’"
Although the song is not currently available for purchase or download, the interest in the song has generated talks about the possibility of making it available to the public.
"Wouldn’t it be great if Taisha’s cover of The Otherside could not only be downloaded, but also provided free of charge to all Apex customers, along with a compilation of some of Taisha’s other great songs?" said Mr Shaw.
The Otherside was written and released by New Zealand band Breaks Co-op in 2005, and became the country’s number one airplay hit of the year and winner of the Single of the Year Award at the 2005 New Zealand Music Awards.
The song was chosen by the Apex marketing team for it’s "distinctively Kiwi, carefree feel".
Breaks Co-op not only approved Taisha’s rendition of their hit song, but also praised the artist for her excellent recording.
Taisha is a well-known and sought after solo artist as well as a member of New Zealand singing troupe The Ladykillers. In 2008 Taisha and composer Malcolm Smith released an award-winning album in te reo Maori, under the name Aonua. Taisha has also recently been named the 2010 ambassador for the Waiata Maori Awards.
