Despite the uncertain outlook for the tourism industry at least one company is banking on increased demand.
Apex Car Rentals, one of New Zealand's largest rental car companies has recently announced a $25 million fleet expansion.
Part of the fleet growth for this season with include the addition of an extra 1200 cars, 700 of these will be new 2010 model Toyota Corollas and Toyota Previas. The new cars are due to start arriving on their doorstep from 28 September.
Apex has had a stellar growth path over the last 20 years, growing from a solely Christchurch based company with 6 cars in 1992 to a nationwide company with over 4000 cars.
Spokesperson for the company, Auckland based director Ian Berrington said "This investment in new fleet is an integral part of our plan to offer the best value in rental cars to our customers. We chose to purchase Toyota vehicles because our experience in the industry has demonstrated that Toyota's are unsurpassed in reliability - which is of vital importance when you consider that our customers travel throughout the country in all driving conditions".
The decision to add 2010 model vehicles to their existing fleet, is due to the demand they have received already for this coming summer season, along with Apex's early preparation for the Rugby World Cup 2011.
Christchurch based Managing Director Phil Lennon comments "We have been grateful over the past couple of weeks for the many supportive emails and messages that we have received from our customers both in New Zealand and overseas. Many are saying that the Christchurch earthquake won't stop them holidaying in New Zealand this year. Immediately after the earthquake we saw an initial flurry of cancellations from people who had been planning travel to Christchurch in the short term, however overall summer reservations are considerably ahead of last year and we have every reason to believe that this summer and the lead-up to the World Cup will be very positive for the tourism industry."
