Kiwi-owned company Apex Car Rentals has launched the first ever New Zealand car rental iPhone application – allowing customers to book an Apex rental car anywhere, anytime, in less than a minute.
Apex Rental Cars is New Zealand’s largest privately owned rental car operation and attributes much of its phenomenal growth over the past few years to the early adoption of leading edge technologies. Director Ricki Shaw is responsible for the design of this new technology, which went live earlier this month.

According to Ricki, "2010 is shaping up to be one of those watershed years when mobile touch-screen devices like the iPhone will achieve real traction, not just among businesspeople, but in the consumer market as well, and especially amongst travellers and tourists."

It is widely accepted that designing technology for people 'on the move' requires a different approach than designing PC applications for people sitting at their desk. "The trick is to start from scratch and put yourself in the shoes of the user" says Ricki, "Users are increasingly demanding a 'gobble and go' approach to the way that they use their mobile phones. Whether it’s sending a quick txt or checking their email inbox or schedule, they want to get the job done with the minimum of fuss. When using their phones they become very 'time focussed', and get very frustrated if they have to needlessly wait for fancy images to download, or repeatedly enter things like their contact details time and time again."

Making an online rental car or accommodation booking should similarly be a streamlined process according to Apex. Using Apex’s new iPhone App, within less than a minute, your done and dusted …and better still, next time you make a booking it’s even faster, because the App is smart enough to remember all of your personal details and preferences!

What makes this new technology extraordinary is how intuitive and easy it is to use. "When designing the App we wanted to make it so efficient to use that even a busy executive would prefer to make their own car rental reservations, rather than get their PA to do it for them." explains Ricki.

Apex call this approach to simplifying business 'Thinking Kiwi' and doing things 'the Kiwi way' – after all, as Ricki points out, "renting a car isn’t Rocket Science and shouldn’t be a complicated thing!"
