The Maori history of Auckland is fascinating. It is known to the Maori people as Tamaki-makau-rau the maiden with 100 lovers. It earned its name because it was a place desired by all and conquered by many. Greater Auckland rests on three harbours, the Waitemata and Kaipara to the north and the Manukau to the south.
